  nick urwin

Born in Singapore in 1969, Nick Urwin travelled overland with his returning parents to the UK as a toddler.
Perhaps the formative memories of a passing landscape viewed from the front seat of a Landrover kindled his abiding interest in painting as an attempt to capture the world in pictures.
Nick went on to study at Falmouth and Kingston schools of art. He has been painting in south east Cornwall and Plymouth for the last 15 years and currently lives and works in the Tamar valley.
This is a river valley and landscape that he knows intimately, as for seven summers he worked as a guide on the Tamar river taking tourists on a canoe expedition. He says,” the most remarkable thing about it was the joy of seeing afresh each day with tourists eyes the same beautiful scenery, it changed with every tide. I would take a small sketch book and make rapid drawings as we drifted on the tide, some days I’d fill a whole book.”

Painting in the winter months his early paintings concentrated on the figure in interiors, in the recent paintings the figure has returned in the larger landscape of the Tamar valley and the landscape of his journeys around Cornwall and further a field.
His work is charcterised by the loose handling of oil paint with an intuitive sense of colour underpinned by a confident drawing style.

Introducing the work to mybritart.com is a selection of smaller vigorous and at times playful oil paintings.
